Tanzania's national team, the Taifa Stars, continued their impressive run in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2025, clinching a thrilling 1–0 victory over Mauritania in front of a roaring home crowd at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium.
In a match that saw both sides adopt a cautious and tactical approach, it took a moment of brilliance in the dying moments to separate the teams. Shomari Kapombe, the experienced defender, became the hero of the night when he latched onto a precise pass from Iddy Nado to score in the 89th minute.
The goal not only sealed the win but also electrified the thousands of fans in attendance, as chants of “Taifa Stars!” echoed across the stadium
With this result, Tanzania now sits comfortably at the top of Group B with 6 points from two games. Having won their first fixture as well, the Taifa Stars are in a strong position to advance to the quarter-finals, pending results from the remaining group matches.
Mauritania, on the other hand, faces mounting pressure as they remain winless and must now fight for survival in their final group game.
The first half was a tightly contested affair, with limited chances on either side. Both teams played cautiously, aiming to avoid early mistakes. As the second half progressed, Tanzania started dominating possession and pushing higher up the pitch.
Their persistence finally paid off when Nado split the Mauritanian defense with a clever through ball, finding Kapombe in the box who finished calmly under pressure.
