A recent study conducted by Mwelekeo Insights in Nairobi has uncovered some intriguing insights regarding the perspectives of young women on marriage. Out of a total of 2,687 women surveyed, an impressive 59% expressed that they would consider the idea of having a second husband. The study specifically targeted women in the age bracket of 18 to 30, revealing that many of these women believe that marriage does not inherently promise a fulfilling or satisfying life. In fact, the findings suggest a significant mindset shift among these young women, as a notable 80% of them prioritize achieving financial stability and advancing their careers over the traditional concept of marriage. Those who are highly educated and hold employment tend to view marriage as a less crucial element in their lives.
Additionally, the survey brought to light that a majority, specifically 60%, of the respondents hold the belief that marriage could potentially limit their personal freedom. In contrast, only 25% of the women surveyed harbor a positive perspective about marriage, indicating a clear divide in attitudes toward this institution. When examining the role of religion, the study found that 53% of the participants feel that it significantly shapes their views on the concept of marriage. However, a lesser 33% opined that religion has a minimal influence on their opinions regarding marriage. Overall, these findings point to a noticeable shift in attitudes among young women in Nairobi, who are increasingly placing greater emphasis on their individual autonomy and financial independence, rather than adhering strictly to traditional marital roles.
